A Passion and a Calling

Mary and Steve Kendrick have always loved finding treasures. Mary was an avid resale shopper and garage sale expert, and whenever she could, she operated a booth in a local antique mall.

The Kendricks love the feeling you get when you find a great deal, and they love helping other people find things they want or need at an affordable price. As Christians, they felt like they were being called to help people get things they need affordably.

Along with two business partners, Mary and Steve founded Shop Around the Corner in 2004 in Washington Square, at the intersection of Highways 100 and 47 in Washington, Mo. The following year, they bought out their founding partners. Mary’s friends in the resale industry helped the couple navigate owning a business in the early years, which was a huge blessing because they avoided many of the pitfalls new business owners face.

By 2007, the Shop had outgrown its first home and was relocated to its current site, first setting up shop in a smaller building and then again moving to a 35,000 square-foot space in 2009. In 2022, the Shop relocated once more to the old Goodwill store at 2030 Phoenix Drive. As the saying goes, “The Rest is History!”

Your Gathering Place

At Shop Around the Corner, we’re proud to have built a community of kind, generous, and welcoming people. We’ve been fondly dubbed “Washington’s Gathering Place” because of the number of people who meet in the store and spend time visiting, chatting, and browsing the shop.

We love to provide live music for customers to enjoy each week, along with specials that excite the bargain hunter in us all.

Being Frugal is Fun

Over the years, we’ve noticed a shift in how consumers buy things. People are realizing that spending more on something doesn’t make it better. It just means you spent more of your life working to acquire it. That’s why we shop resale! It’s difficult, if not impossible, to beat the quality and value you get when you purchase gently used items. Likewise, parting with things that don’t bring you joy helps clear your spaces for things that do. Resale really is a win for everyone involved.

Speaking of making your home beautiful — we can also help make it comfortable. We’ve always carried gently used furniture, but we have moved into the new furniture space. We partnered with Best Home Furnishings, an American, family-owned company that is growing to become one of the largest furniture manufacturers in the world. The goal is to produce the best quality product at the most affordable price, which aligns with our goals at Shop Around the Corner.

We also offer Therapedic mattresses by The Bedding Group. Another American company, Therapedic is committed to quality and to providing a good night’s sleep. They back up their workmanship with a 10-year warranty. If we don’t have what you’re looking for, we can order it.
